Valerie Camillo has been appointed following a sports administration career which has included roles at the National Basketball Association, an NHL franchise and the Washington Nationals.

Recently named Women's Tennis Association (WTA) chair Valerie Camillo is familiar with working around the clock through her career - including one in a strategic role for a tourism firm which runs American celebrated artist Dolly Parton's theme parks.

Beyond the expertise into Parton's business interests, Camillo arrives at the helm at women's tennis armed with deep knowledge throughout athletics and show business, with past roles in key executive jobs at the world's premier basketball league, major league hockey and professional baseball.

Camillo commences her new role at the WTA next month, taking over from the veteran Steve Simon, after his lengthy leadership is ending upon his departure.

Her move into women's tennis arrives during "a moment of accelerated growth and opportunity", says the WTA.

This is the moment for women's sport. Financial returns throughout female athletics last year exceeded one billion dollars and business analysts forecast achieving $2.5bn (£1.8bn) by 2030.

Her primary objective will be to ensure the organization and athletes - including Coco Gauff, Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek - obtain meaningful share from the growth.

"The tour features the most prominent female athletes internationally and hold advantageous standing across female athletics," leadership commented.

"In women's competitions, funding, viewership and coverage grow rapidly.

"Typically obstacles for women's competitions requires creating visibility, gaining audience and engagement," continued the new leader.

"Our challenge is a little different - having established legacy, we have an incredible legacy, massive worldwide audience, and including highly visible, best-rewarded players worldwide."
